The Student Advisory Council of UTeach Fine Arts, the teacher preparation program in the College of Fine Arts, planned and presented a timely discussion of Classroom Safety on April 12, 2018. Council President, Francis Rodriguez had the idea for the presentation after discussions with other student teachers. She welcomed the presenters, faculty and many of the UTeach Fine Arts student teachers. Speakers included David Carter, Chief of the UT Police Department and Officer James Hyatt with the Austin Police Department. They were joined by Mikayla Myers, Emergency Management Coordinator from Austin Independent School District’s Police Department and her colleagues Emergency Management Specialists, Amber Gardner and Grant Burnett. The speakers discussed school safety, active shooters and emergency planning, with an emphasis on how to react to emergency situations in the classroom and the environment of the school beyond the classroom. The also included tips on creating a climate of safety and respect. The conversation became interactive as the presenters engaged the audience and responded to questions from past and present student teachers.
